The Kremlin and the Red Square in the Heart of Moscow
By Abby Agier
The Buildings of the Kremlin
The Kremlin is a huge set of buildings in a sort of triangular shape, right in the middle of Moscow. It's fortified and its name calls up the image of KGB agents and Stalinism. Nowadays, Moscow is the center of post-Communist capitalism and is full of energy and new activities. West of the Kremlin are beautiful gardens, east runs the Moscow River and south of the Kremlin is the Red Square. The buildings of the Kremlin were built in the fourteenth century as the nerve center of the Russian Orthodox Church. Later, in the fifteenth and sixteenth century, three enormous cathedrals were built here.
Historical Treasures
Nowadays it's a great cultural place to explore. Visit the Armoury which encloses a multitude of treasures to see the royal regalia. From a 30 km distance you can see the two golden domes of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower. They belong to the Annunciation Cathedral where you can admire some great iconostases. The biggest bell of the Kremlin belongs to the bell-tower of the Assumption Cathedral. You can also visit the place where Stalin lived, the Poteshny Palace; and the headquarters of the President, the Senate.
The Red Square
The Red Square is 700-m and is called Krasnaya ploschad in Russian. The magnificence of the St Basil's Cathedral stands out with its wonderful colored domes, the archetype of a Russian Church. These domes are shaped like an onion with a golden needle on top which is again topped with another smaller, golden dome.
Lenin's Tomb
The burial place of Lenin is at the foot of the Kremlin wall. Every day, many people still queue up to walk past his tomb. Altogether the composition of the beautiful churches and palaces, the robust Kremlin wall and the sheer scaled Red Square make a long-lasting impression.
